In Brexit and Trump we can see an objection to the ruling elite and their type of globalisation. The question we ask ourselves is: how to find a medicine against the nationalist, fearful and polarizing rightwing populism that has gained power across Europe recently?

European New Deal is such a medicine. It’s core idea is to offer a functioning alternative to the neoliberal economic model that is driving Europe in tatters. We want to discuss DiEM’s proposal from the perspective of everyday life in Finland. What does END offer to us?

  • Group discussion (15-20 min) where participants introduce themselves in small groups of 4-6 people and think of problems that the current economic policy causes in their lives and what they wish to change. Ideas will be collected.
  • Introduction into the logic of neoliberal economic policy and presentation of Rodrick’s dilemma (30 min). The effects of wrongly timed austerity politics will be illustrated through the Finnish 1990 depression.
  • Introduction to the END-paper (30 min) by Heikki Patomäki
  • Comments on the END-paper (60 min+) by Lauri Holappa and general discussion. The comments that are raised will be integrated into Helsinki1 DCS’s feedback on the END-draft.
