Press release: DiEM25 condemns Brussels’ attacks

“Europe must pull together more than ever before.”

ROME, ITALY, 22 MARCH 2016.- DiEM25, the Democracy in Europe Movement, strongly condemns the terrorist outrage carried out this morning in Brussels and conveys its deepest condolences and solidarity with the injured, the loved ones of those slain so viciously and, also with the people and authorities of Belgium.
Europe must hit terrorism hard.
No stone must be left unturned before the perpetrators of these crimes are apprehended and brought to justice.
But, at the same time, we must avoid inappropriate responses, inadvertently creating new sources and forms of discontent that engenders terrorism in the future.
On this bleak moment in Europe’s history, Europe must pull together more than ever before. Unity must be our goal. New borders between our countries, and new forms of islamophobia, did not help make us safer and more secure after Paris. Unilateral actions in the refugee crisis reduced our capacity to act in unison, confidently and with the humanism that is Europe’s strongest weapon.
Today, it is time to mourn our dead, tend to our injured and apprehend the culprits.
Tomorrow it will be time to re-think our Union, our European democracy, our common response to common challenges, our joint fight against all forms of bigotry, misanthropy and fear.
