E66: Is this EU worth joining, or is there an alternative?

The war in Ukraine is bringing to light a key issue for non-EU countries today. Some of those countries, including from ex-Yugoslavia, are at another crossroads.

Should they join this EU or choose something else? And if the latter, what other realistic options are there? Moreover, looking at the last rounds of EU enlargement, what have been the results so far and what lessons might they offer for other countries considering joining now?
