Mexican president López Obrador and Yanis Varoufakis agree on New Non-Aligned Movement and call for the release of Julian Assange

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, hosted Yanis Varoufakis at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, January 31, where their bilateral working meeting lasted 90 minutes and covered a wide range of issues.

Varoufakis proposed to López Obrador the creation of a New Non-Aligned Movement, on behalf of DiEM25 and the Progressive International. After a thorough discussion of the consequences of the New US-China Cold War, the war in Ukraine, the new wave of debt and poverty threatening the countries of the Global South, and the ongoing division of the world into two currency blocs (dollar and yuan), the Mexican president agreed on the need for a new international economic and monetary system that only an effective and radical New Non-Aligned Movement can promote.

During the discussion, which also included issues related to the relations of friendship and solidarity between the peoples of Greece and Mexico, Varoufakis thanked López Obrador on behalf of DiEM25 and MeRA25 for his continuous and consistent support to the campaign for the release of Julian Assange, whose continued imprisonment demonstrates the intolerable hypocrisy of a West that pretends to care about freedom of press, truth and human rights.

At the end of the meeting, López Obrador and Varoufakis expressed their confidence that the cooperation between the two parties will continue, referring also to Varoufakis’ meeting with finance minister Rogelio Ramirez del O that followed on Tuesday and with foreign affairs minister Marcelo Ebrard on Wednesday morning.

In bidding farewell to Varoufakis, the president of Mexico told him: “You must continue the struggle.”
