MERA25 protest for Tempi victims at Greek Independence Day parade in Athens

While Greek government officials were being peddled on the podiums at the Greek Independence Day parade, MERA25 was in Syntagma square demanding justice

Until we get justice, we will persist, wherever and whenever we find ourselves, for the state’s crime of the Tempi train crash.

While Greek government officials were being peddled on the podiums at the Greek Independence Day parade on March 25, the united initiative of ‘MERA25 | Subversive Ecological Left’, together with student associations, institutions, citizens, intervened at the Athens parade at Syntagma square and demanded justice and respite.

Justice, for the state crime of Tempi, and the death of 57 of our fellow human beings, due to the criminal policy of privatisation, the dismantling and abandonment of the railway, a policy that continues unrepentantly by the government that is accountable only to the oligarchs, the highway lobby and big interests.

Justice for the unprecedented cover-up by government officials in violation of every procedural and democratic rule, from concealment of evidence to protection of the responsible ministers and government officials, Christos Triantopoulos, Kostas Karamanlis, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and others.

And respite, to take a breath from this scheming government, that unleashes immoral attacks on the relatives of the victims, on those in poverty, and those repressed.

This, after all, is the true spirit and the living message of genuine popular uprisings, such as the revolution of 1821, the vigilance of society to win freedom, and a better, just life for the current and future generations.

Authoritarianism and slander will not silence us, nor will it frighten us. We will not stop talking about the crime of Tempi until the government of cover-up is over, until those responsible, however powerful, are punished and until we have public safe transport that the public deserves.
