DiEM25 in the Netherlands joins The Surge International March: Why we support it

Humanity faces many interconnected crises. Some of them, like climate chaos, imperialist wars and genocide, are very real. Other crises are imaginary: populists create culture wars to divide and exploit the people, ironically using their ‘social’ technologies that should belong to and unite the people.

All these crises, both real and manufactured, have one common root cause: capitalism. Capitalism destroys our planet, causes climate chaos and creates unprecedented inequality. Capitalist oligarchs control our governments, abusing their military power to enforce their unbridled economic imperialism. Millions flee wars, oppression, exploitation and climate chaos – only to find themselves unwelcome in the countries that are responsible for their hardship in the first place. The populist-manufactured ‘migration crisis’ prompts a new rise of fascism we thought we’d never see again. This not only endangers the hard-won emancipation of vulnerable groups in our society, but even our free press, judiciary system and what democracy we have left.

Capitalism knows no borders or limits – and neither do we! DiEM25 is an internationalist revolutionary movement that aims to replace the dictatorship of populists and capitalist oligarchs with real, deep democracy – both political and economical. We aim to replace the current so-called representative democracy by truly democratic people’s assemblies. We envision a decentralized economy based on cooperative enterprises that have no shareholders except for the people employed in them. We propose migration policies that do not divide but strengthen communities, protecting jobs and respecting human dignity. We want to transition from militarized borders to humanitarian support, from exploitative trade agreements and supporting dictators to balanced partnerships, from climate injustice to green transitions.

Carpe DiEM – the day is ours… join us in the democratic revolution!

DiEM25 in NL joins The Surge International March - DiEM25 Calendar

A selection of our policies:

  • A decentralised economy based on cooperative enterprises, with an unconditional basic income and a job guarantee
  • Degrowth in harmful sectors, growth of renewable energy, public health, mental health, social care, unlimited education and culture.
  • A new, decentralised European democracy that is social, transparent, honest, peaceful, open and liberated
  • A Green New Deal for Europe that would make our continent sane, responsible, just and bold
  • Technological platforms are socialised into digital commons in which people fully own their data, and a Europe that is creatively and technologically sovereign and puts technology into the service of solidarity and people, not profit.
  • A migration policy that protects workers and stabilise communities without putting locals and newcomers against each other, tackles the root causes of forced migration (wars, economic exploitation, and climate chaos), rejects fear-mongering and prioritises fairness for all.

The Event

DiEM25 in Netherlands joins the International March organised by The Surge, a platform of multiple activist organisations around Europe. Our spokesperson Lucille Cornelius is going to give another fierce speech during the demo.

International Mobilization 19 January: It’s not just Trump – Fight climate chaos, fascism, genocide and war

2025 has to be a turning point. Already the fight to stay under 1.5 degrees warming has been lost. Around the globe, authoritarianism gains steady ground. The Palestinians are being wiped off the map. Growing poverty and inflation continue to worsen the cost of living crisis. Something needs to be done.

Everywhere, people are rising up against neoliberalism, capitalism, fascism, and authoritarianism. To all of you: we salute you! But it is not enough. We remain too divided. To create meaningful change and overthrow the system of oppression, we must unite. We must surge.

Climate activists, pro-Palestine supporters, antifascists, anarchists, all enemies of oppression everywhere: we need to put aside our differences and unite against our common foe! We must understand and accept that everything is interconnected: the climate crisis begets more war, which begets more genocide, which begets more fascism, which begets more poverty, which begets a worsening climate crisis. It is a doomloop and we must break it!

When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty! Join us on the 19th of January 2025 and surge with us to overcome the barriers standing between us and a better future for all!
