The Knesset member opposing the genocide: Ofer Cassif in conversation with Yanis Varoufakis

In a political landscape dominated by silence and complicity, one voice has stood firm against the tide of propaganda and repression. Ofer Cassif, Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Israel and Knesset Member with Hadash-Ta’al, is the only Israeli Jewish MK openly and courageously denouncing the genocide unfolding in Gaza.

While the Israeli establishment, backed by Western powers, clings to the narrative of “self-defence,” Cassif has shattered the silence – calling it what it is: Genocide, practised by the world’s last Apartheid state. For this, he paid a heavy price. In a chilling sign of how far Israel’s democratic pretences have eroded, Cassif was suspended from the Knesset for six months – a punishment not for misconduct, but for telling the truth.

Now, he’s back. And this Wednesday, he returns to the Knesset – and to the fight for justice.

In a rare, unfiltered livestream conversation hosted by DiEM25, Cassif will join Yanis Varoufakis to discuss the realities on the ground, the escalating crisis in Gaza, and what resistance looks like from within the very system perpetrating these crimes.

Since October 2023, Israel has killed over 52,000 Palestinians – one third of them children. Gaza is on the brink of famine. Aid convoys are blocked. Homes, hospitals, and entire neighbourhoods have been flattened. And behind this devastation looms a chilling agenda: permanent annexation of Gaza. Even Donald Trump has weighed in, calling for a U.S. “takeover” – a proposal the UN has likened to ethnic cleansing.

With global attention waning and Western governments complicit in silence or worse, Ofer Cassif remains almost entirely alone inside Israel’s political structure in demanding an end to the slaughter.

What compels someone to speak out when nearly everyone else remains silent? What pressures – and dangers – do dissenters like Cassif face within Israel? And what must the international community do now to stand against this unfolding horror?
