Will the Gaza ceasefire hold? Justice for Palestine cannot wait

As reports emerge of a potential ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, DiEM25 acknowledges the necessity of halting the bloodshed in Gaza. But make no mistake: this is not peace. It is not justice. It is not an end to the systematic violence and oppression that Israel perpetuates as a settler-colonial, apartheid regime.

Even as this ceasefire was announced, Israel escalated its brutal attacks on civilians, killing 73 people in cold blood. This grotesque pattern of deceit – signing agreements only to break them – is not new. It is the behaviour of a rogue state that operates with impunity, shielded by the complicity of Europe and the United States.

For decades, the people of Gaza have been subjected to inhumane conditions under a siege that amounts to genocide. Entire generations have been condemned to a life of suffering, while Western governments fund and arm the oppressors. Silence is complicity, and complicity makes accomplices of us all.

A ceasefire might pause the bombs, but it does not end the apartheid, the land theft, or the ethnic cleansing. It does not absolve the crimes of Benjamin Netanyahu or his government. DiEM25 demands that citizens across the globe refuse to be silent, divest from complicity, and demand accountability.

Justice for Gaza is not negotiable. Ceasefires stop bullets; they do not dismantle systems of oppression. Without sustained, global pressure for liberation and justice in Palestine, the cycle of violence will continue. Let this fragile ceasefire be a spark – not an excuse for complacency.
