Press release: DiEM25 Takes European Institutions to Task on Transparency

DiEM25 breaks ground in Italy with its first Assembly to promote its ‘Transparency in Europe Now!’ campaign – a “prerequisite to Europe’s democratisation”

acquarioROME, ITALY, March 18, 2016– DiEM25, the Democracy in Europe Movement, inaugurated on 9th February in Berlin, will hold its first Assembly next Wednesday, March 23rd in Rome. DiEM25’s first event in Italy will serve as the movement’s launching pad for DiEM25-Italia, as well as for rolling out its ‘Transparency in Europe Now!’ campaign.

Hosted at Rome’s Acquario Roma – Casa dell’Architettura, the Assembly’s program will take place in two parts, a morning session (09:30 14:00) and an evening session (19:00 – 21:00). The events will center on DiEM25’ Manifesto’s pronouncement of “transparency as a prerequisite to Europe’s democratization.” Speakers include, among others, Yanis Varoufakis, Srećko Horvat, Marisa Matias, Julian Assange, Cecilia Strada, Lorenzo Marsili, Igiaba Scego, and Jorge Moruno.

DiEM25’s Transparency in Europe Now!’ campaign, demanding all EU decision-making to take place under citizens’ scrutiny, will be launched during the Assembly’s evening session. DiEM25´s petition will be hosted by WeMove.EU, the European progressive online campaigning organisation.

yanis-varoufakis“Europe is disintegrating as a result of terrible decisions taken by the EU’s leaders under conditions of absolute opacity,” explained Varoufakis. “The small step to #Let_Light_In, to allow Europeans a front seat in the meetings where their future is decided, will constitute an enormous leap toward democratising Europe and re-legitimising the EU in its citizens’ eyes.” DiEM25’s campaign not only aims at exposing the opaqueness of European institutions’ meetings and summits, but also at making public all relevant documents and protocols under the current TTiP negotiations.

DiEM25’s first Assembly is co-organised with European Alternatives, Piroetta and Talk Real. Access to the Assembly’s entire program is free (pre-registration required for the evening session) and all meetings will be livestreamed in English and Italian.

Noam Chomsky, Ken Loach, James K. Galbraith, Saskia Sassen, Walter Baier and Brian Eno are among the more than 17,000 members who have joined DiEM25 since the movement’s foundation in Berlin on 9th February.
