DiEM25 in Cyprus at bi-communal event: The future of Palestine, Lebanon and Syria

DiEM25 in Cyprus participated and put forward our positions in a political event in occupied Nicosia, with title ‘Palestine, Lebanon, Syria: The imperialists are carving up the world anew, redrawing borders with the blood of the people’, last February.

The event was organised by “Independence Path” (Bağımsızlık Yolu), a Turkish-Cypriot Marxist party, at their offices. The keynote speakers were Athina Kariati from New Internationlaist Left – NEDA, Mustafa Keleszade from the host party and Demos Ioakeim from our movement.

The format of the political event was a 20-minute political introduction by the main speakers, followed by a Q&A session with questions, contributions and, in general, a productive and valuable discussion.

Representing DiEM25 in Cyprus, Demos Ioakeim produced a political analysis of the current situation in the Middle East, taking into account Cypriot, European and global aspects. Among other things, he noted:

“Now, more than ever, the world must reject the genocidal ambitions of Trump, Netanyahu, and their enablers. We must stand with the Palestinian people, amplify their voices, and demand justice. This is not just a regional crisis – it is a test of our collective moral responsibility.

“The real liberation of Syria would be the immediate stop of imperialist interventions in the region and the prevalence of a genuine movement for democracy and self- determination.

“The campaign for peace in the Middle East is not only a campaign to liberate Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese but also an opportunity to liberate Israelis from fear and the rest of us in the Europe from a descent into authoritarianism, stagnation and war. A free Palestine, a free Syria, a free Lebanon is a prerequisite for a free Europe, a free West, a world that begins to make sense again.”
