Genoa rises on November 28: Unite against the war economy

On November 28, DiEM25 will join Genoese dockworkers, grassroots unions, and workers from across Italy in the streets of Genoa to say clearly and collectively: enough to Europe’s war economy and to the complicity that binds it to Israel’s ongoing assault on the Palestinian people.

The mobilisation – declared as a national strike by CUB, USB, CLAP and COBAS – comes at a critical moment. Italy’s latest budget manoeuvre shifts €23 billion into military spending, draining resources from health care, public education, welfare and wages.

This is not an isolated national trend: as DiEM25 has long warned, European governments have embraced a destructive logic in which escalation replaces diplomacy, and militarisation replaces investment in people.

Our presence in Genoa continues the stance we have taken for years, from condemning Europe’s arms exports to Israel to the recent articles urging sanctions, accountability, and an immediate end to the siege on Gaza.

Today, the moral and political stakes could not be higher. As UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese – who will join the Genoa rally – has repeatedly stressed, the international community is facing a test of its commitment to human rights.

In Genoa, we will march alongside Yanis Varoufakis, Greta Thunberg, Thiago Ávila, Chris Hedges, and many others who refuse to accept a world where public money feeds militarism while ordinary people are told to tighten their belts. When dockworkers refuse to load weapons onto ships bound for Israel, they demonstrate what DiEM25 has always believed: workers have the power to break the chain of complicity.

The day of action also connects to the global Make Amazon Pay mobilisation. From Genoa’s port – one of the symbolic frontlines of logistics and global supply chains – workers will echo a message resonating worldwide: it is time to build alternatives to the corporate giants that profit from exploitation, surveillance, and union busting. A dignified future demands an economy organised around human rights, labour rights and collective power.

And the struggle does not end there. On November 29, the movement continues with demonstrations in Milan and Rome for the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. DiEM25 will be present, standing firm with all those calling for justice, peace and self-determination.

Every presence counts. Join us in Genoa.
