Kaja Kallas’ delusional warmongering is leading Europe to disaster

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s new vice-president and so-called ‘High Representative’ for Foreign Affairs, is not representing Europe. She is representing escalation, provocation, and the failed logic of war. With each speech, she drags the European Union further into a catastrophic geopolitical gamble – one that risks turning Ukraine’s tragedy into a pan-European calamity.

On her very first visit to Kyiv in December 2024, Kallas declared: “The European Union wants Ukraine to win this war.” This was not a message of peace, nor a call for diplomacy. It was a declaration of war by proxy – made on behalf of 450 million Europeans, without so much as a democratic mandate.

But she didn’t stop there. In a display of historical ignorance and diplomatic hubris, Kallas floated the idea that post-war Russia should be broken up into “small states”. Just imagine the reaction if a Russian official made similar comments about the EU. Does she believe that threatening to dismantle a global superpower is sound geopolitical strategy – or just good PR for NATO?

Her most absurd claim yet came when she stated that “if Russia were to lose this war, then we don’t have to worry about World War III.” The sheer naivety of this statement would be laughable if it weren’t so terrifying. A humiliated, destabilised Russia is not a recipe for peace—it’s a recipe for a desperate regime lashing out in unpredictable ways.

Our co-founder Yanis Varoufakis has already called Kallas out for her warmongering. He rightfully pointed out that her approach makes Europe less safe, not more. Instead of acting as a responsible diplomat, she seems intent on turning the EU into an extension of NATO’s most hawkish tendencies.

Europe doesn’t need another war cheerleader. It needs a peace plan – one rooted in realism, not fantasies of regime change or imperial retribution. DiEM25 has laid out a clear path to de-escalation: an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of Russian troops, a demilitarised zone, and Ukraine’s status as a neutral state. This is not appeasement. It is the only rational way to avoid turning a brutal war into a continental – or even global – catastrophe.

Kallas, unfortunately, represents everything broken in the EU’s foreign policy machine: the subservience to NATO’s most hawkish impulses, the allergy to diplomacy, and the utter disregard for the voices of European citizens calling for peace. She’ll be remembered as the woman who helped push Europe into an avoidable disaster.

Enough is enough. Europe must reject this reckless agenda before it’s too late. It’s time for a foreign policy that speaks for people – not power.
