This Black Friday through Cyber Monday, from November 29 to December 2, a global coalition of workers, activists, and organisations is coming together for Make Amazon Pay Day.
This movement calls for systemic change in Amazon’s exploitative practices, from its treatment of workers to its environmental destruction. The actions, taking place across the globe, aim to hold the retail giant accountable and advocate for a more just future.
Amazon’s global impact: Why this matters
Amazon is one of the most powerful corporations in the world, valued at over a trillion dollars. Yet, this wealth comes at a steep cost. Workers in Amazon’s warehouses endure gruelling conditions and are denied fair pay. Meanwhile, the company’s massive carbon footprint exacerbates the climate crisis, and its tax avoidance strategies deprive governments of essential revenue needed for public services.
These injustices are at the heart of the Make Amazon Pay movement, which unites labour unions, environmental groups, and civil society organizations worldwide.
Amazon’s role in Israeli surveillance and oppression of Palestinians
Another of the company’s major transgressions that is rarely mentioned in global media is that Amazon profits from supplying technology to the Israeli government and military equipment used to surveil and oppress Palestinians.
Through contracts that support Israel’s apartheid system, Amazon plays a direct role in sustaining the occupation and enabling human rights abuses. This is yet another reason for global solidarity against the corporation.
In line with our unwavering support for Palestinian liberation and human rights, Make Amazon Pay day, particularly this year, is also a moment to confront the company’s complicity in the ongoing genocide.
What Is Make Amazon Pay Day?
Make Amazon Pay Day is a synchronised wave of protests, strikes, and advocacy efforts that will span multiple countries over four days. It coincides with Amazon’s peak sales period, highlighting the disconnect between the company’s skyrocketing profits and the poor treatment of its workers and the planet.
In 2022, the campaign saw over 80 actions across 32 countries. This year, the movement aims to be even bigger, with participants demanding workers’ rights, climate justice and tax fairness.
