‘Re Alexis: The uprising of the oppressed’ in Cyprus

On Monday, February 10, in a packed hall in Limassol, our event on the historical ‘Alexis’ Revolution‘, which we co-organised as DiEM25 in Cyprus, together with NEDA and the Committee for the Promotion of the Re Alexis’ Revolution, took place.

The event was complemented by music and poetry, inspired by the revolution, while the presentation of the historical event and its social and political implications was accompanied by extracts from the documentary, that is currently being prepared, about the revolution.

The second part of the event was followed by an open discussion, after presentations by political organisations. Representing our movement, Demos Ioakeim developed the political aspects and characteristics of the revolution of Re Alexis, which have symbolic, timeless and contemporary value, for reflection, discussion and illustrative purposes. The aspects that were developed concerned its organizational methodology, its subversiveness, the lack of spread of its story, its class character, and the parallels between the feudal system of the day and the techno-feudal system of today.

The magnificent history of the overthrow of the feudal ruling class of Medieval Cyprus ought to illuminate our struggles for the overthrow of the present oligarchic techno-feudalism, using modern means and tools.

“No more tradition’s chains shall bind us. Arise, ye slaves, no more in thrall..”
