DiEM25 Cyprus takes part in Internationalist Camping Event in Karpasia

DiEM25 Cyprus participated with other local and international progressive collectives in the Internationalist Camping Event in Karpasia, Cyprus from October 14-16.

The event was organised by NEDA (NEa Diethniki Aristera, lit. the New Internationalist Left) – a Left-wing transnational movement, with similar values and principles to DiEM25.

The format of the discussions was a 20-minute presentation by three speakers on each issue, followed by a Q&A session with questions and discussion.

The representatives of DiEM25 Cyprus participated and put forward positions on:

1) Abortion and Women’s Rights in Turkey:

  • Rowe v Wade and Gender Rights
  • Women’s Rights
  • Violence Against Women

2) The War in Ukraine

The session’s objective was to discuss and answer:

Where is the world heading? What tasks for the Left?

In addressing these questions, DiEM25 delegates’ position was in support of the people of Ukraine and highlighted the need for measures to promote the disengagement of the combatants.

“Russia and US-NATO-EU are escalating a war without end […] and, to this end, DiEM25-MeRA25 proposes a Six-Point Peace Solution…”

3) Elections in Turkey, Cyprus and Greece – The need for new political organisations of the working class

“We call on everyone in the arena to join the fight for a break with the oligarchy. To build fronts of progressive forces in Cyprus, Turkey and Greece…”

Finally, we collectively showed our support for the Iranian protestors by holding up placards with several slogans of solidarity.

“Iranian workers are not alone,” “Stop the killings, stop repression,” and “Free all political prisoners,” featured prominently.
