DiEM25 welcomes ICC decision to issue arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu

DiEM25 welcomes the decision by the International Criminal Court to reject Israel’s challenges concerning its jurisdiction over its war crimes in Palestine, and to issue arrest warrants for prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant.

The ICC’s ruling highlights the legitimacy of its investigation into violations of human rights and humanitarian law in Palestine, providing a vital opportunity to scrutinise actions that constitute war crimes. This decision aligns with our unwavering commitment to human rights, equality, and accountability on a global scale.

This is a significant step forward for Palestinians who have endured decades of systemic oppression, displacement, and genocide, although we are fully aware that this decision alone will not bring an end to the brutal oppression currently being suffered by the Palestinian people at the hands of Israel.

As Yanis Varoufakis and Brian Eno wrote in an open letter to the judges of the International Criminal Court on the October 7 anniversary:

“The Israeli government has attacked schools, universities, libraries, archives, cultural centres, heritage sites, mosques and churches. Professors and teachers have been killed, along with their students and often their entire families. Meanwhile, under the cover of the Gaza conflict, Israeli settlers, protected by IDF soldiers, are evicting Palestinians from their ancestral homeland in direct violation of every principle of international law.”

Therefore, this decision serves as a reminder that we must not stop pushing for international solidarity and efforts to create a democratic and peaceful resolution to this conflict.

And in light of this landmark decision, we urge the global community to support the ICC’s work, resist attempts to undermine its independence, and to demand that this latest ruling comes to fruition.
