Cyprus: Both sides need to heal the wounds opened by NATO

Half a century has passed since the Cyprus tragedy. Half a century that, despite the ongoing exodus of refugees (both Greek and Turkish Cypriots) brought about by the de facto partition, Nicosia and Athens still pretend to not understand that:

NATO not only did not help prevent the Cyprus tragedy but was fully involved in its organisation and execution.

No armament programme shields the country when our weapons are controlled by NATO – as in 1974 when Greek air superiority (with the Phantoms that Turkey did not have) and sea superiority (with advanced Greek submarines) was cancelled on the orders of NATO and the US.

The trigger for the tragedy was given by the far-right, patriotic, nationalist, racist minions of Washington in Athens and Nicosia.

Supporting the occupation of occupied territories of any people is a huge gift to Turkey and a gravestone in the push for the unification of Cyprus.

July 20 marks half a century that US-British imperialism is celebrating its triple achievement, which is none other than the transformation of Cyprus into:

  • A US-British floating aircraft carrier at the heart of the Middle East
  • Israel’s accomplice in the genocide of the Palestinians
  • A tax haven for the world’s darkest financial interests

On this black anniversary, in the context of the analysis co-authored by DiEM25 Cyprus, MeRA25 honours the victims of the Cyprus tragedy with a triple commitment:

  • WE DO NOT FORGET that the partition was not brought about by the two communities but, jointly, by Greek and Turkish extreme right-wingers under the guidance of NATO
  • WE DO NOT FORGET that the struggle against the Occupation is common between the peoples of Cyprus and Palestine
  • WE DO NOT FORGET that the only way to heal the wounds of all Cypriots is through joint actions of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots towards an independent Cyprus free from all foreign powers!
