MeRA25 denounces furthering Greek involvement in Ukraine and Middle East wars

DiEM25’s party in Greece warned that the government’s subservience to NATO, the US and the EU is extremely dangerous, as it draws the country ever deeper into the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East

In an announcement, MeRA25 cited news that the Greek frigate ‘Psara’ is being deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean for operations alongside the aircraft carrier USS Ford and her strike group. It added that the US naval base at Souda in Crete will obviously be used to support Israeli attacks on Gaza and Lebanon. It should be noted that Souda is the only deep water port between Virginia and Dubai capable of providing support to US aircraft carriers.

The announcement further draws attention to the Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis‘ recent visit to Varna, to attend the trilateral summit between Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. Despite Greek media coverage suggesting that the summit was about “energy cooperation and connectivity”, MeRA25 cites Bulgarian newspaper reports according to which the focus was entirely different. Namely, NATO’s demand for the establishment of a “military transport corridor” stretching from the Greek port of Thessaloniki, through the Bulgarian city of Varna, to the Romanian port of Constanta and from there on to Moldova and the Ukraine front.

Accusing the Greek government of being a yes-man to its transatlantic hegemons, MeRA25 proclaims the need for an independent foreign policy and the forging of a New Non-Aligned Movement in the service of global peace and justice, as described in the Athens Declaration.
