Lisbon: Yanis Varoufakis docuseries premiere and ‘Better Democracy, Better Europe’ debate

This Saturday sees the premiere in Lisbon of the series on Yanis Varoufakis, followed by a debate with Ana Maria Valinho, Manuel Arriaga, Patrícia Robalo and members of DiEM25

DiEM25‘s Lisbon Collective has joined forces to organise the Better Democracy, Better Europe evening, which takes place next Saturday 28 September at Fórum Lisboa, with the premiere of the documentary series In the Eye of the Storm: the political odyssey of Yanis Varoufakis, directed by Raoul Marinez, at 7pm, followed by a debate featuring Ana Maria Valinho (XR Portugal), Manuel Arriaga (Citizens’ Forum), Patrícia Robalo (Livre) and members of DiEM25.

The audience will see episodes 2, 3 and 4 of the series, which focus on Yanis Varoufakis‘ experience as Greek Finance Minister at a time when Greece was being pressured to accept the rules dictated by the Troika. In these episodes we see Yanis Varoufakis telling behind-the-scenes stories and exposing the contradictions and weaknesses of the European institutions, at a time when the Eurogroup, an informal body with no powers under the European treaties, has become the central pillar of decisions taken at European level.

The debate that follows the screening of the series aims to shed light on ways of democratising the European Union and its institutions, thinking about what can most benefit the lives of European citizens in the short and medium term. What values of democracy should be defended in order to improve the lives of citizens in Europe?
